It is not known precisely what the origin of the hourglasses. It is believed that the Roman armies used them overnight to so accurately calculate sunrise and create strategies for battle; it has also been said that they were invented by a French monk toward the end of the eighth century. At that time, Charlemagne, King of the Franks, had one so big that only should be turned every 12 hours. The hourglasses were widely used in navigation to measure the time of the voyages, especially when the sky is cloudy and could not be used or the astrolabe and the noctolabe to find the time with the stars.
